Amelanchier canadensis (Serviceberry) is a small deciduous tree, or shrub, with attractive white early spring blossoms. It provides year-round interest in the landscape, producing edible fruits in summer, and beautiful fall color. It has small, elliptical leaves, with finely toothed margins. Serviceberries can be naturalized at the edge of woodlands, used as a specimen plant, or planted in small groupings as a screen. It is native to boggy areas and does well near water gardens. The trees cast light shade and their roots are not invasive, so other plants, such as perennials that prefer partial shade, can easily be planted underneath.

Serviceberry likes sun to partial shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. If you are looking to attract birds and wildlife to your landscape, look no further. The characteristics that make this native species so visually appealing – showy flowers, stunning fruit, winter color – are some of nature’s most powerful draws for the animal kingdom. To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.

Supplied as 12-18” bare root.
