Astrantia (Masterwort) is exotic and yet very easy to grow. The flowers are dome-shaped and in shades of purple, white, red, and pink. The leaves appear primarily in basal clumps, with smaller versions on the stems. It is a fabulous bloomer and very effective when planted in mass. Its clumping form is nice in an English garden setting, and it makes an excellent, long-lasting cut flower. Bracts usually remain attractive well after bloom. Keep the plant deadheaded for a longer bloom period.

Masterwort is best grown in organically rich, well-drained soils in part shade. Soils must be kept uniformly moist and not allowed to dry out. Best performance occurs in cool summer climates where night temperatures consistently dip below 70° F. In optimum growing conditions, plants may spread to form large clumps. They generally do well in full sun in the north, but do not like the heat and humidity of the Deep South, even in part shade.

To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.

Supplied as #1 sized bare root.
