Caladium is an old favorite known for its big, beautiful leaves. Caladium leaves are combinations of red, pink, green and/or white, with colored midribs and contrasting backgrounds and borders. The varied leaf colors and patterns create many uses for caladiums in landscaping. They thrive in partial sun and shade, and leaves may scorch if they do not receive protection from the afternoon sun. Consider caladium for the patio or porch since they are great to grow in containers and large pots.
Caladium requires warm temperatures to sprout and grow. Plant in spring, after the ground warms to 50°F. Dig a hole 2 deep, set the tuber firmly in place, cover with soil and water thoroughly. They prefer a moist, well-drained soil, and benefit from regular feeding in the form of a timed-release fertilizer or occasional applications of a water-soluble fertilizer. Caladium can also be used as a house plant. Use 3 tubers to a 6” pot. Water sparingly until first leaves appear.
Caladiums are hardy only to Zone 10 (30°F). They naturally die back for a rest period in winter. The tubers can be dug and stored indoors in colder climates. A week after they die back, lift the tubers with the foliage still attached, clear the excess soil, and allow to air-dry in a warm, sunny location. When the foliage breaks away freely from the tubers, pack them in lightly moistened peat moss or sand and keep them in a dry, well-ventilated place where the temperature is cool (50-60°F) until the following spring.
Supplied as #1 sized tuber.
