Dianthus is reminiscent of the “cottage garden” look and they are also known as “pinks” because their petals look like they were cut with pinking shears. Varieties range from single flowering to double flowering, and garden types to cut flower types. Sweet William types have characteristic little flowers with fringed petals of red, pink, purple or violet, with many cultivars offering a pleasing spicy fragrance.
