Liatris (Blazing Star) is an interesting perennial featuring rigid fluffy flower spikes shooting up out of a base of hairy, needle-shaped foliage. Multiple stalks up to 10” arise from basal leaves. Flowers generally open top to bottom on the spikes. The stems are often long enough for cutting, and are often seen in mixed bouquets. They are very useful in the sunny border or meadow garden as vertical accent plants, or in containers. Once established, this hardy perennial blooms mid-summer through early fall. They do not need staking, and are drought tolerant and deer resistant with no serious insect/disease problems. Clumps may be easily divided every 3 to 4 years in the spring.
To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.
Supplied as #1 sized bare root.
