Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa) is great as either a specimen or in mass plantings. Its pink buds open into white, fragrant flowers in mid-spring. You can harvest an abundance of flavorful, tart cherry-like fruit in early summer from these beautiful dwarf trees. The ½" red fruit can be eaten fresh or used in pies or jelly and is relished by birds. It will grow into a wide, bushy tree or it can be planted 4-5' apart to make an edible hedge. The bark is an attractive, shiny reddish brown, with exfoliating layers, and the dark green leaves are very fuzzy on their lower surface.
